St. Kitts and Nevis are unique in the Caribbean because of its vast history, diverse culture and its colourful landscapes. From the white sandy beaches of Antigua to the lush tropical rain forests of Dominica and Costa Rica, St. Kitts and Nevis has it all in one single federation.
Strong and steeped in History
The government of St. Kitts and Nevis stands out in the Caribbean for its efforts in preserving all of its historic sites. Not many other islands can boast fully intact fortresses, working plantation houses and too many plantation chimneys to count.
Originally colonized some 5000 years ago by Native Americans, both the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis have many unique and well preserved Native markings and drawings all over both islands. These ancient hieroglyphics cannot be found on any other islands.
The arrival of English and French settlers in 1626 and again in 1628 brought many different crops to the islands and after a brief trial with tobacco, sugar became the commodity of choice for export. Sugar shaped St. Kitts in a way nothing else could, coining its nickname "Sugar City", plantations were built and with the introduction of slaves from Africa, the island was turned into the British Empire's main hub for colonizing the rest of the Caribbean. St. Kitts was intergral to the expansion of the British Empire.
St. Kitts and Nevis has truly embraced its history.
Prevailing Culture
In today's world of TV, the internet and mass globilization, it is difficult to keep your identity while keeping up with the rest of the world. Many other islands have tried and failed, we have not. St. Kitts and Nevis are able to do this by embracing our past and keeping our eyes on our futures.
But keeping an open mind and an welcoming hand has always been the way here and people are always welcomed with a warm smile.
